Grandma’s Marathon week arrives; Kara and Shalane; Berlo’s NCHC jersey

The 37th Grandma’s Marathon and 23rd Garry Bjorklund, not to the mention the USA Half Marathon Championships, will be run along the North Shore on Saturday, June 22.

The News Tribune kicks off its race coverage Sunday with two stories: a Father’s Day piece on Scott Pearson of Poplar, Wis., who suffered a heart attack in the 2012 Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and lived to tell the tale here and a look back 35 years, to the 1978 Grandma’s Marathon, the first covered by the Rink and Run editor here.

Duluthian Kara Goucher, the 2012 USA Half Marathon women’s winner, is making a stop with training partner Shalane Flanagan in Madison, Wis., this week on the way to the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. A fun Twitter photo of Kara and Shalane is here.

Minnesota Duluth athletic director Josh Berlo shows off a new NCHC jersey in a Twitter photo here.
