(Duluth, Minn.) Joe Moore set a course record and claimed the men’s division title at today’s 24th Fitger’s 5K in downtown Duluth.
Moore, 29, of Minneapolis, won the race in 14 minutes and 53 seconds, topping the previous fastest time (Jeremy Polson, 2002, 15:08) by 15 seconds. He also won the 2012 Park Point 5-Miler and placed 12th at the 2012 USA Half Marathon Championships in Duluth last June.
Former Minnesota Duluth eight-time Division II All-American Morgan Place, 23, won the women’s crown with a time of 17:53.
A record 1,926 people registered, and an unofficial total of 1,522 finishers (1,420 runners, 102 walkers) completed the 3.1-mile race.
All net proceeds – about $20,000 – from the Fitger’s 5K benefit the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF), a Grandma’s Marathon program focused on the promotion and development of youth athletics in the Northland.
