Ohio State scored three power-play goals Friday afternoon on the way to a 4-2 victory over Minnesota Duluth to open a first round, best-of-three Western Collegiate Hockey Association women’s playoff series before 562 fans at Amsoil Arena.
The Bulldogs (14-15-4) need a win at 2:07 p.m. today to extend their season and force a deciding game Sunday. Ohio State has won three straight games at Amsoil Arena this season. UMD is 1-7-1 the last nine games.
The Buckeyes (18-14-3) trailed 1-0 just four minutes into the game but rallied for a 2-1 advantage after one period on power-play scores from Ally Tarr and Paige Semenza.
Goals by defenseman Brigette Lacquette and winger Vanessa Thibault gave UMD a 2-2 tie midway through the second period before Annie Svedin put the Buckeyes ahead for good with 2:41 left in the period. Ohio State was 3-of-4 on power plays, while UMD was 0-of-3.
Senior winger Hokey Langan recorded her 57th career goal, on an empty-net score, with 75 seconds to play to clinch the victory. Shots on goal were 23-23.
UMD’s Karissa Grapp made a second career start in goal, in place of fellow freshman Kayla Black, who is sidelined by an injury. Junior Chelsea Knapp made 21 saves for Ohio State.
