Minnesota State-Mankato fans haven’t spent a lot of time in recent years anguishing over national polls and the PairWise Rankings in anticipation of an NCAA tournament berth.
The Mavericks went 42-62-11 the last three years and haven’t been over .500 since 2007-08 (19-16-4), and were 11th in the 12-team WCHA in 2011 and 2012.
But 2012-13 is different. Troy Jutting, who had Mankato pointed toward better things, was replaced by Mike Hastings and the Purple Mavs have responded. They’re 16-9-3 heading to Amsoil Arena this weekend to face Minnesota Duluth.
Mankato fans are now often checking the PairWise Rankings, and Mankato Free Press writer Shane Frederick reminds the fans to enjoy the games and not get caught up in poll watching. His column this week is here.
UMD assistant captain Keegan Flaherty, out last week with an injury (breaking a streak of 105 straight games), said Tuesday he hopes to be back at practice Wednesday. A couple of Bulldogs were ill Tuesday, but are expected to be available to play against Mankato (as is Flaherty).
Friday’s game is at 7:30 p.m. (and not the normal 7:07 p.m. to allow for better traffic flow with a busy schedule at the DECC, so Rink and Run was told, yet nothing on the DECC web site is showing as a competing event.)
Runners in the Duluth area need no introduction to Ella Fennessy and Gene Curnow, two long time competitors and race volunteers. The endurance community is saying thank you to both on Saturday, Feb. 9:
