Final: UMD women 7, at Ohio State 5

Sophomore defenseman Brigette Lacquette of Mallard, Manitoba, had three goals and two assists Friday afternoon as Minnesota Duluth outlasted No. 9-ranked Ohio State 7-5 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association women’s game played before 190 fans at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

The Bulldogs (12-8-3, 11-7-1 WCHA) stretched their unbeaten streak to nine (7-0-2) and have won five straight.

UMD scored just 41 seconds into the game, on Jessica Wong’s 47th career goal, and never trailed. Ohio State (15-8-2, 10-7-2) pulled even at 1-1 after one period and 3-3 late in the second.

Russian freshman winger Aleksandra Vafina gave UMD a 4-3 lead with 27 seconds left in the second period and Lacquette completed her first collegiate hat trick 54 seconds into the third period. That doubled her goal total this season. The five points by Lacquette marked the best offensive day by a UMD defenseman since Jessica Wong opened the 2011-12 season with two goals and three assists in a 7-2 home win over Boston College on Oct. 8, 2011.

On Friday, Wong, playing center, had a goal and three assists, and center Zoe Hickel added a goal and two assists.

Ohio State, which led 33-28 in shots on goal, had a goal and two assists from junior scoring leader Ally Tarr. The Buckeyes allowed the most goals in a game since losing 8-0 at No. 1 Minnesota on Oct. 20.

Winning goalie Kayla Black, a freshman, made 28 saves.
