Proctor’s Welch named Gatorade Minnesota cross country runner of year

Proctor High School senior Matt Welch of Duluth has been named the 2012 Gatorade Minnesota Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. The Gatorade awards, determined for athletic and academic excellence, began in 1985 and are made in eight sports for boys and girls.

Welch was undefeated during the Minnesota high school season and won the Class A state title on Nov. 3 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. He has a 4.0 grade point average, volunteers with the school’s peer leadership program and plays the trumpet and French horn.

Recent Gatorade Minnesota boys winners include Josh Thorson of Wayzata in 2011, Adam Zutz of St. Francis in 2010 and Aaron Bartnik of Eden Prairie in 2009.

Shakopee senior Maria Hauger was named the 2012 Gatorade Minnesota Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. She won a fourth straight Minnesota Class AA title and was third in the Foot Locker national championships.
