Minnesota Duluth women 4, St. Cloud State 1

Freshman goalie Sofia Carlstrom of Stockholm, Sweden, had a successful college debut Saturday afternoon as Minnesota Duluth defeated St. Cloud State 4-1 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association women’s game in front of 291 fans at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

Carlstrom made 28 saves and the Bulldogs scored three first-period goals on the way to a series sweep. UMD (5-6-1 and 4-5-1 in WCHA) also won 4-1 Friday and has its first back-to-back victories in a month. Freshman Kayla Black had started UMD’s first 11 games.

Brienna Gillanders and Jenna McParland had power-play goals less than three minutes apart early in the opening period for a 2-0 lead, and Zoe Hickel pushed that to 3-0 a minute later.

St. Cloud State (4-9-1 and 2-8) broke Carlstrom’s shutout bid on Lisa Martinson’s first goal of the season 1:53 into the third period.

The Bulldogs led 36-29 in shots on goal.

UMD stays on the road this weekend at No. 10-ranked North Dakota.
