Defending champion Marisa Shady of Esko finished third in Saturday’s Minnesota Class A high school girls cross country meet at St.Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
Top-ranked Clare Flanagan, a Blake School sophomore, won in 14 minutes, 21.7 seconds for 4,000 meters.Cannon Falls sophomore Emi Trost was second in 14:34.7 and Shady, a junior, third in 14:45.5. Esko junior Kallyn Knutson was 24th in 15:30 and than was to travel to Grand Rapids to play for Esko in the Section 7AA volleyball finals versus Mora at 6 p.m.
Shady ran an identical time to last year’s winning time. She was with the leaders through a 5:25 first mile and ultimately finished about 20 seconds behind.
“I was mentally prepared and focused more on how our team would do than the individual race,” said Shady. “I gave it all I could and I’m not going to be sad or disappointed. We were very happy with our team finish. It was one of the best in our school’s history.”
Esko was second in the 1979 Class A state meet and won the title in 1980. This season the Eskomos were ranked No. 3 and Shady was also rated No. 3.
St. Cloud Cathedral won the Class A girls title with 94 points, Annandale was second with 118 and Esko third with 132.
Three runners from the Northland placed in the top 15 of the Class A boys race. Esko senior Jackson Lindquist was ninth in 16:32.3 for 5,000 meters, Proctor senior Romeo Benish was 10th in 16:32.9 and Proctor junior Matt Welch was 14th in 16:40.6.
In Class AA girls, Hermantown junior Natalie Stauber was 15th in 14:44.7 and Grand Rapids sophomore Erin Baker 19th in 14:50.5.
In Class AA boys, Duluth East senior Ryan Davis was 75th in 16:46.9 for 5,000 meters.
