On the ice; Division I attendance; Jimmy Rich; UMD football

After a few days of captains practice on campus, the Minnesota Duluth men and women were at Amsoil Arena on Friday. The men were on the ice for about 90 minutes. All of the returnees and expected freshmen are in school, which opens Tuesday. Providence College transfer Aaron Jamnick, a center from Hibbing, is allowed to practice, but won’t be eligible to play until 2012-13.

Starting Sept. 15, coaches are allowed to be on the ice two hours per week.

The UMD women open with an exhibition Sept. 30 at home against the Minnesota Whitecaps. The men open with an exhibition Oct. 2 at home against Lakehead University of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Rachel Lenzi of the Portland (Maine) Press Herald tracked down NCAA home attendance figures for the 2010-11 Division I season, which has seven WCHA schools in the Top 10. Wisconsin was No. 1 and UMD No. 9. The statistics are here.

Duluth native and former UMD television play-by-play voice Jim Rich, now a Fox 9 sports anchor in Minneapolis-St. Paul, has been hired to do TV play-by-play for St. Cloud State games.
