Preseason Top 10; Hobey watch; major junior defections

The 2011-12 college season is two months and two weeks from starting, and Inside College Hockey has a preseason Top 10 here.

Last month, INCH also projected candidates for the 2012 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. See if Jack Connolly is on the 10-player list here.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association and Atlantic Hockey met Tuesday to discuss the future of their conferences. U.S. College Hockey Online has an update here and Hockey News has an update here.

Blogger Timothy Boger takes a statistical look at the WCHA for 2011-12, team by team — points returning and points lost — here.

The Chicago Express of the East Coast Hockey League has a release on the signing of Cloquet native Tyler Johnson, a former Colorado College foward, here.

Duluth native Josh Mizerek, a defenseman who has been playing in Europe, recently signed with the Hull Stingrays in England. A team release is here.

Also former Bulldogs Josh Meyers and MacGregor Sharp are said to be headed to Bozen-Bolzano, Italy to play in 2011-12. Both have played minor league hockey the past two years and spent time together last season with Abbotsford (British Columbia) in the American Hockey League.

Much discussion is taking place this month after a number of NCAA-recruited players have instead chosen to play with Canadian Major Junior teams. Some of the reaction from:

Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald here.

Chris Peters U.S. Of Hockey here.

Chris Dilks of Western College Hockey here.

Bruce Ciskie here.

Michigan blogger Tim Williams, following the loss of goalie John Gibson, in a post here.

And, although this is a few weeks old, University of Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick, who was in goal in the 2011 NCAA title game versus UMD, had this July 6 tweet:

“I had the most vivid dream last night that we won the national championship. The banner said 2012, looking ahead not back.”

  1. Reporting sure has become easy. Just post a link to everything and you never have to write anything yourself.

    • Where are your reports KRL? I think you should take over Kevins job, if you think you can do better!

  2. Greetings KRL. I do virtually no reporting on Rink and Run. It is a spot to gather information. The reporting is done in the Duluth News Tribune. Hope you are a subscriber. Thanks for reading

  3. KRL – when you get a chance I am certain that your mom and dad would like you to clean up the basement.

I was really surprised to see all those B10 schools listed in the polling.

  4. So I guess Shawn Hunwick had a dream that he was playing for the Bulldogs in 2012. And KRL you may want to do your research because Kevin Pates is one of the best (if not the best) beat writers in college hockey.

  5. Thanks for the comments, folks. I was just pointing out that stories primarily appear in the Duluth News Tribune. The blog is primarily used as a gathering site for hockey-running related stories from elsewhere

    • Except when I write them!! 😀

I’m with BBP. Is Shawn Hunwick transferring to this year? How odd. We are obviously repeating.

I will “settle” for a MacNaughton Cup.

  6. Pates, this is far more hockey information than any of us deserve in July!
    Keep it coming!
Thanks for being the best one-stop shopping source for all my college hockey news!
