Northern Michigan and more

The Marquette (Mich.) Mining Journal has all of the reaction from Northern Michigan following Wednesday’s admission to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for 2013-14. That story is here.

Since the first hint of a Big Ten Conference hockey league, Minnesota coach Don Lucia has said he’d like to keep rivalries going with Minnesota’s other Division I teams. 1. The fact the Gophers are making this “friendly gesture” to its fellow Minnesota schools to invite them to participate in a regular season tournament down at the ‘X’ is just a veiled attempt to play them without actually having to commit a trip to SCSU, Mankato, BSU or UMD. I agree with what a UMD fan said on a Sioux hockey site regarding this proposed tournament — Thanks, but no thanks. If the Gophers want to play the Bulldogs then do it the old fashioned way — a 2 for 2 deal on each teams home rink. Really? Which team is going to benefit the most from this tournament? Yes, Minnesota. How are bars, motels and restaurants in Duluth, Bemidji, St. Cloud and Mankato going to benefit from this arrangement? It may give fans from SCSU, Mankato and Bemidji a reason to come down to the Twin Cities and get a whiff of playing the Gophers in a setting that reminds them of the old WCHA Final Five, but it’s not going to duplicate that postseason atmosphere. This is a pathetic attempt by the Gophers to throw a bone to the other Minnesota schools they are leaving behind.

  2. I hope the UMD administration tells the Gophers if they want to play the Bulldogs then its an even trade. Either a home and home series or 2 games at UMTC and then 2 games at AMSOIL the next season. Any tourney at the “X” is two home games for the Gophers. Although, the Bulldogs have won more games at the “X” over the past 3 seasons then the Gophers have played there. This tournament is just an excuse by the Gophers to claim that 2 tourney games at the “X” are somehow neutral sites games. Give me a break.
