All-American Connollys; Schmidt Unsung Hero

Minnesota Duluth linemates Jack and Mike Connolly were named All-Americans on Friday by the American Hockey Coaches Association.

Jack Connolly, a junior center from Duluth, was on the West first team after being a second-team pick in 2010. He’s the first UMD two-time All-American since defenseman Norm Maciver was honored for a third straight time in 1985-86. He’s third in Division I scoring with 18 goals and 41 assists for 59 points in 41 games.

Mike Connolly, a junior left winger from Calgary, Alberta, is an All-American for the first time. He leads UMD in goals and is seventh in Division I points with 28 goals and 26 assists for 54 points.

SCHMIDT HONORED WITH UNSUNG AWARD

UMD senior winger Kyle Schmidt of Hermantown has been named the winner of the fifth Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award, announced Friday by the Hockey Commissioners’ Association.

The Division I award is in honor of former Army player Derek Hines, regarded as a consummate team player and team builder. Hines played at Army from 1999–2003 and was a four-year letterwinner and senior co-captain. He was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan in September 2006.

Schmidt, 23, has played in 126 games at UMD with 45 points, including 25 goals. This season he needed two surgeries on a broken hand, but returned to play and scored a goal against Notre Dame. He has a 3.70 grade point average majoring in statistics and actuarial science.
