Langenbrunner, Lake State, Penn State

In the wake of signing Ilya Kovalchuk for $100 million, the NHL’s New Jersey Devils need to cut their payroll by $3-6 million. That will likely require trading some veteran players and that could include captain and right winger Jamie Langenbrunner of Cloquet.

While new coach John MacLean has endorsed Langenbrunner’s captaincy, there was some bad blood at the end of 2009-10 between Langenbrunner and coach Jacques Lemaire (now retired). That Star-Ledger story is here.

Langenbrunner was on a line with Jason Arnott and Patrik Elias.

The college season opens in three weeks, with Minnesota Duluth starting on a road trip to Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan on Oct. 8-9. Lake Superior State had a decent season in 2009-10, finishing 15-18-5, while Northern Michigan was impressive in losing in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff title game to Michigan 2-1 before losing to St. Cloud State 4-3 in the NCAA West Regional first round in double-overtime, finishing 20-13-8.

When Andy Baggot asked Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez on Thursday about the inevitability of a Big Ten hockey conference, with Wisconsin and Minnesota to leave the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, Alvarez said:

“I don’t know the logistics — how long it takes to get out of a league, all of that — but I sense that we will move in that direction.”
