When Kleinendorst, 49, left USA Hockey in May he told the News Tribune that his hope was to return to coach professionally. Before taking the U18 position, he spent the previous nine seasons in the New Jersey Devils organization, including three years as head coach of the Lowell Chiefs in the American Hockey League.
“This was a special group and it was a neat experience for me, and a great opportunity,” Kleinendorst said of his U18 position. “But at the end of the day, my heart still wants to be in professional hockey, where I had been working for almost 20 years.”
