Birkholz leaves Minnesota

     This brief statement Tuesday from the University of Minnesota on sophomore forward Josh Birkholz of Maple Grove, Minn., who is leaving the program. Birkholz had these stats in 2009-10 –five goals and one assist in 36 games. He was a third-round pick by Florida in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He played at Blake.

     From the Gophers:  University of Minnesota men’s hockey coach Don Lucia announced today that sophomore forward Josh Birkholz, who was facing suspension for a violation of team rules, has decided to leave the program.

     Lucia will have no further comment on the matter.

WHAT:

The U.S. Under-18 Select Team will practice at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the training facility of the Washington Capitals, in Arlington, Va., on Tuesday, Aug. 3, prior to departing for the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

The U.S. Under-17 Select Team will practice at the Iceplex on Friday, Aug. 13, before departing for the 2010 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament.

Tim Army, head coach of the 2010 U.S. Under-18 Select Team, is a former assistant coach with the Washington Capitals (1997-2002), while Matt Herr, assistant coach of the 2010 U.S. Under-17 Select Team, played two seasons with the Capitals (1998-99, 2000-01) … U.S. Under-18 Select Team goaltender Jay Williams is a native of the Washington, D.C. area (McLean, Va.) … The U.S. Under-18 Select Team will compete at the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament from Aug. 9-14, in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia, and will be coached by Army, with Chadd Cassidy and Jay Varady serving as assistant coaches.
