A Houghton Prediction

This prediction from Brandon Veale, sports editor of the Houghton Mining Gazette, leading to Friday’s Minnesota Duluth at Michigan Tech series:

Before you declare this series over and the points in the UMD column, remember that one of Tech’s four wins this year came in the DECC back in November. Kevin Genoe made about 933 saves (actually, it was 48) and Eli Vlaisavljevich scored the game-winner at 14:07 of the third period. Further, the final six regular season games after this are basically tune-ups for the playoffs now, so the motivation factor will be out in force.

UMD comes in off a home split with Wisconsin and can take the league lead back with a good weekend (league-leading Denver is playing non-conference).

The odds don’t favor the Huskies, but, this is Winter Carnival and picking Tech to get swept this week is like picking Santa Claus to fall down the chimney and break his neck. I just can’t do it.

The Prediction: Tech 2-1 Friday, UMD 5-3 Saturday

  1. If the Bulldogs play like they did Saturday against Wisconsin it won’t matter how fired up Tech will be. The only motivation the ‘Dogs need is to know they will leave Houghton alone in first place if they take care of business on the ice this weekend.

  2. This is a gut check weekend for the Dogs.
This program needs to win the WCHA regular season to prove something, and to do that they need to handle teams like TECH. A split is really unacceptable. There is not issue on talent. It’s all about desire and drive at this point, and coaching.
