FCC Together at Practice

The Mike Connolly-Jack Connolly-Justin Fontaine line, which played together briefly in Saturday’s 4-2 loss at St. Cloud State, has been reunited in practice this week at the DECC. The threesome may start in Friday’s nonleague home game with Clarkson University.

They’ve been skating on the team’s top power-play unit this season.

"We want to see if they can do some things 5-on-5," said coach Scott Sandelin.

Fontaine leads Division I in goals with seven, while he and Jack Connolly are tied for second in total points with 10 each.

It’s looking like defensemen Trent Palm and Scott Kishel will not play against Clarkson. Palm, who played both games at St. Cloud State, is still getting into game shape following summer hip surgery. Kishel suffered an upper body injury Friday.

Senior defenseman Chase Ryan has recovered from a broken hand and is available to play for the first time this season.

Sophomore center Travis Oleksuk said he’s recovering well from a knee sprain (hurt in the season’s first game) and could be ready to play for Nov. 6-7 games at Colorado College.

Sophomore goalie Brady Hjelle recorded two assists in the St. Cloud State series, his first at UMD. That’s one more than All-American Alex Stalock had last season. Stalock had seven assists in 101 career games.

Upper Midwest Elite League

Caleb Herbert of Bloomington, Minn., playing for Southeast, led the Upper Midwest High School Elite League in regular season scoring with 13 goals and 24 assists for 37 points in 21 games.

Garrett Hendrickson of Virginia had a goal and an assist over the weekend to finish as the leading scorer (8-14-22) for North, which finished the season 4-15-2. Adam Krause of North was second in the league in goals with 16.

The Elite League playoffs begin Friday with four quarterfinal games at New Hope Arena. The seminfinals are Saturday and the finals Sunday, also at New Hope. Shattuck-St. Mary’s is committed to another tournament, and their spot in the field will be taken by the Omaha Jr. Lancers, a midget team from Omaha, Nebraska.
