Ben Schneider of Rockford, Ill., won Saturday’s 41st Paavo Nurmi Marathon from Upson to Hurley, Wis., for his second straight victory in the event. Schneider, 23, was first in a field of 229 in 2 hours, 40 minutes, 21 seconds, compared to his 2008 time of 2:35:27. Shawn Callahan, 37, of Biwabik was second in 2:57:13.
Anja Jokela, 25, of Minneapolis led the women’s division in 3:08:06. In the accompanying inaugural half-marathon, the winners among 64 finishers were Mark List, 17, of Lansing, Mich., in 1:23:11 and Melissa William, 32, of Chicago in 1:35:02.
Also, Colombia native David Sarmiento of Minneapolis won Saturday’s fourth Hayward Inline 30-Mile Challenge in Hayward, Wis. Sarmiento, 27, led a field of 90 in 1 hour, 32 minutes, 50 seconds, while Kara Peterson, 39, was first in the women’s division in 1:46:55. Sarmiento was third in the 2008 NorthShore Inline Marathon.
Also, In Saturday’s 15th Twig Firehouse 5-kilometer walk-run, the run winners were Blake Koch in 18:26 and Kathleen Monaghan in 18:28; and the walk winners were Herb Dillon in 34:37 and Mary Mulvain in 36:59.
And in the Kristin Burkholder 5K in Esko, the winners were Brett Parendo in 17:58 and Amanda Lepisto in 19:45.
