Place Ninth in 10,000

Minnesota Duluth freshman Morgan Place finished ninth in a field of 18 Thursday in the NCAA Division II women’s 10,000-meter run final in San Angelo, Texas.

Tanya Zeferjahn, a freshman at Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., won in 35 minutes, 38.46 seconds. Place, From Ellsworth, Wis., ran 36:21.10, and holds the UMD outdoor record of 36:09.60 set in March.

Earlier Thursday, Minnesota State-Mankato junior Kelsey Leonard of Hermantown placed 13th among 22 runners in the women’s 400-meter preliminaries and did not advance to Saturday’s finals. Leonard ran a season-best 55.84 seconds, while Adams State sophomore Michele Williams led the qualifying in 53.97.

UMD senior Maria Swanson was 12th among 18 entrants in the hammer throw preliminaries and didn’t advance to the finals with a distance of 164 feet, 3 inches. She competes in the shot put Friday.
